Deborah Ellis

This week I would like you all to do a little research into the author of our book Deborah Ellis. I will post a link to her wikipedia site but I would like you to read other things about her as well. Post what you can find out about her under this thread. Also you can click the link on that site to find out more about what life is like in Afghanistan.

Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts.

Deborah Ellis was born in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada in 1960She won The Goverver General's Award fo her very first book "Looking For X". Deborah Ellis decided to start writing when she was 11 or 12. She traveled to Afghanistan in 1997 to interview women in refugee camps. From these interviews, she wrote the trilogy which includes: The Breadwinner, Parvana's Journey, Mud City and a adult book called "Women of the Afghan War". While The Breadwinner was inspired by an interview with a mother in a refugee camp, the upcoming books in the trilogy were more imaginative explorations of how children would survive.

The money from her books are donated to charities, such as UNICEF and Street Kids International. She continues to travel to other countries to gather more information for her writing. In her non-fiction books, she has three wishes: Palestinian and Israeli Children Speak and Our Songs Our Stories: African Children Talk About Aid's. Deborah Ellis uses true stories about kids.

Her most recent books are: I am a Taxi and Sacred Leaf, which are both about a young Bolivian boy who explores Bolivia's cocao industry.

Also, in 2006, she was made a member of The Order of Ontario.

Nadia,

Thank-you for your response to this question about Deborah Ellis. I find it interesting that she has actually been to Afghanistan. This makes me think that she really knows what life is like here and I think makes the story even more interesting.

Thank-you for your hard work with this question,

Miss P
